  1. A thistle is a prickly plant of several 
  2. genera, such as Carduus, Carlina, Onopordum, 
  3. and Cirsium, in the family Compositae. The 
  4. stems are spiny, the flower heads purple, 
  5. white, or yellow and cottony, and the leaves 
  6. deeply indented with prickly margins. It is 
  7. also Scotlands national emblem.
